The Day I Go

I saw the hole in the ground,
With all my friends gathered round.

There were tears streaming down their face,
As they mumbled about some terrible waste.

And there my wife stood smiling sweetly,
You could tell she did not agree completely.

We had talked about it years before,
She knew I was in pain no more.

When they began to sing a morbid hymn,
She turned away with a sly little grin.

Turning on the stereo switch,
I heard one old friend call her a  bitch.

She heard it too, and her grin got big,
As she told them all that I was dancing a jig.

“He's with his Father and resting at home,
No longer on this earth must he roam.

Sure we miss him and want him to return,
But his happiness is what we truly yearn.

This is the song he asked we play,
When the time came that he had gone away.”

The music started and laughter could be heard,
As his voice sang out with these words.

I won the race, I fought the fight,
And now my friends I've earned the right.

To go on home and live in peace,
No longer burdened by disease.

I'll miss you all I must say,
But we'll meet again when it comes your day.

Celebrate this day on earth,
Celebrate the day of my eternal birth.

No more pain, no more sorrow,
Only peace and love for each tomorrow.
